CYUT hosts Hakka storytelling event to promote intergenerational learning

CYUT, in collaboration with the Taichung City Council for Hakka Affairs (the Council), recently hosted a Hakka storytelling event at the Shihcheng Elder Care Station in Dongshi. Centered around the picture book “Nga+ vug^ ka+ gai+ mui` sui`” (The Taste of My Home), the event brought together community members of all ages for a day of storytelling, nursery rhymes, and traditional tangyuan-making. Families voted “Hakka Stir-Fry” as their favorite dish, and the event successfully integrated the Hakka language into everyday life, promoting intergenerational learning.
Jui-Shen Wei, Vice Chairman of the Council, highlighted the Council's long-standing commitment to encouraging both young and old to learn together. With the strong support of CYUT, a series of Hakka storytelling events were held over the summer at various community spaces. This time, young children from a nearby kindergarten were invited to join. Wei expressed hope that through meaningful interactions between the elderly and the young, families will feel more comfortable using the Hakka language at home, ensuring the culture and language continue to thrive for future generations.
Hsueh-Fang Hsu, CYUT’s Deputy Chief Officer of Continuing Education, shared that “Nga+ vug^ ka+ gai+ mui` sui`” is the second Hakka picture book published by the Council. The book explores the flavors that represent home, while also celebrating Dongshi’s rich history and harmonious multicultural community. The event invited an elementary school teacher to share the heartwarming story. Adding to the fun, a band and a Hakka singer were present to teach Hakka nursery rhymes, helping children discover new words in the Hakka language. Elders in the community also shared their favorite traditional Hakka dishes, creating an atmosphere filled with joy, culture, and connection. The event left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
