CYUT welcomes Vienna architecture students for Bamboo Workshop
CYUT's Department of Architecture hosted the 2024 SDGs Taiwan Bamboo Workshop, drawing the participation of 30 architecture students and faculty from the Vienna University of Technology for an enriching exchange. The workshop featured a keynote speech by Yen-Chih Lai, CEO of Bamboo-Lai Culture & Creation, who played a key role in designing the Bamboo Pavilion at the Taichung World Flora Expo. His address focused on bamboo's role in regional revitalization and achieving net-zero emissions, highlighting the industry's contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and University Social Responsibility (USR). Throughout the workshop, students had the opportunity to learn from experienced craftsmen as they worked on the "Bamboo Shikainami Basket," one of the basic styles of bamboo craftsmanship technique. They were particularly impressed by the intricacies of bamboo construction methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, wrapping, and heat treatment.
Bamboo construction holds a notably low carbon footprint, at only 2% of steel construction, while possessing six times the carbon sequestration of wood. This eco-friendly material not only preserves cultural aesthetics but also aligns with global efforts towards environmental sustainability and net-zero promotion. Taiwan's innovative bamboo construction catalyzes industry transformation and expands the possibilities of green material utilization. The workshop aspires to attract global attention and involvement in bamboo crafts and design, collectively advancing sustainable development goals.

The event significantly deepened participants' understanding of Taiwanese bamboo craftsmanship and construction design while also providing a platform to explore the diverse applications of bamboo and expand industry influence.
